What is Osaka City Public Hall?
The Osaka City Central Public Hall was completed in 1918 (Taisho 7), with the original plan by Shinichiro Okada and the detailed design by Kingo Tatsuno and Yasushi Kataoka, based on a donation from one Osaka citizen, Mr. Einosuke Iwamoto. Since then, it has been deeply involved in the development of Osaka's culture and art for more than a century, hosting operas and concerts by top international artists as well as lectures by celebrities from various fields such as Einstein and Helen Keller.Preservation and restoration work began in 1999 (Heisei 11) and was completed in September 2002 (Heisei 14). In December of the same year, it became the first public hall building in western Japan to be designated as an important national cultural property.
The building is a steel-framed brick structure with three floors above ground and one floor underground. It is based on the Neo-Renaissance style. The exhibition room on the first basement floor displays the history and items related to the public hall, and you can freely tour it.
